Hey, guys. It's Kristy and it’s great to be back with you guys.

We're going to be talking about dog allergies; a continuation.

One of the main problems or symptoms our dogs suffer from are environmental allergies. We talked about that last Tuesday. If you didn’t get a chance to see that, go check it out. There’s a live recorded video on our Facebook page (or on our blog) you can learn about the different types of things that dogs can be allergic to.

So environmental allergies are anything your dog is allergic to outside. It could be the trees, pollen, to grasses, it can be ragweed, anything that would trigger allergy to us can mostly likely trigger allergy in your dog.

How and Where to Spot Dog Allergies

Dogs suffer a little bit different than we do. A lot of times when we have allergies we get red itchy eyes, or sneezing a lot, have trouble breathing and your dogs can have the same types of symptoms but often it’s a little bit different.

One of the first places that you want to look is all of your dog’s head.  Just as we get red itchy eyes, your dog can also get red itchy eyes. You want to look to see if there’s any redness even around in this (the eye) area of your dog. See if they are constantly scratching at their face or if they are rubbing their face along the carpet or along the furniture, that could be a sign.

They could be sneezing. It’s not as common for dogs to sneeze. It’s more that they get inflamed and itchy skin.

You can also look at the ears if they’re constantly scratching at their ears.
The next thing that you’ll check is the armpit area or also the stomach area. Often you can see if they have red spots. They might have hives over there. Same with their skin, they might just be scratching at it constantly.

A lot of times dogs that are really itchy from allergies would scratch so hard that they’ll start to get sores along their body. So you might notice up along their shoulders, along their neck, sometimes even close to their eyes they actually have red spots.

When they become red spots they’re often called hot spots and basically, it’s just from your dog itching so badly.

One of the bad things about this happening is that if your dog is itching that much that it creates hot spots. These hot spots can become infected. So if you see anything where your dog is breaking open sores from scratching or if they have that odd smell like they really have a bad odor, please take them to the vet right away because they could have an infection.

To make it easy for you, I came up with the acronym H.A.P.S.S.

So you can look over your dog: head, armpits, paws, skin and stomach area.
When dogs are chewing on their paws, it’s actually because their paws are itchy to them.

What you can do is try to rinse off their paws if they’re outside and you know there’s a lot of pollen. But they also might just be scratching with their other paw. They might be rubbing their skin against the furniture like I said or in the carpet.  

Let’s just recap what the main symptoms are that your dog is going to have:

  • They can be chewing at their feet
  • Constant licking, constant scratching
  • Rubbing their face
  • Inflamed ears


Dog Allergy Remedies


So what do you do if your dog shows any of these symptoms?

Often if you take your dog to the vet---which is never a bad idea to take your dog to the vet, they can help you decide for sure if it’s allergies especially if they’re having things in their ear that is not an ear infection or anything else going on.


A lot of times they will say they will give them steroid for a short time, they might subscribe Benadryl for you and they might also get Apoquel for itching to stop them from itching especially if they’re itching really bad.

But one of the problems in those types of things especially Benadryl, steroids is they actually suppress the immune system.
If the immune system is getting suppressed it’s actually doing the opposite of what needs to happen to keep the immune system improve. It in turn exacerbates the allergic condition internally. Long term the allergens may actually trigger a worse reaction in your dog.

Some natural things to do, you know that we’re all about natural holistic ways to help with allergies, one is to bathe your dog.

If you know that in the spring your dog has a lot of allergic reactions every season, every time they’re outside, bring them in, give them a bath. That just helps to wash off the pollen. Just like us it helps cleanse the areas so that they don’t have those allergens on them triggering a reaction.

This can be annoying if your dog really suffers from allergies but obviously they have to go outside multiple times a day. If they’re exposed to a lot of pollen you don’t want to have to bathe them multiple times a day.

Another thing, people sometimes give fish oil or coconut oil and basically that helps to soothe the skin especially if they have dry itchy skin. It can help to make the skin very nice and just make them have nice shiny coat.
